Evaluation - Question 5

  • How did you attract/address your audience?
With the opening to our piece the sun is shining and with the slow movement of the clouds the audience are placed into a false sense of security as all appears to be calm and pleasent. The music here also sounds quite calm but slightly tension building, with a sudden beat when the first credit comes on. We decided to have the sudden drop in strings and just a heart beat sound in order to make the audience jump or allow their heart to 'drop' thus emphasising the thrilling feel and catching them off guard.

Shot of the sun from our piece

The main component of our piece I felt attracted the audience was our music, as I helped toward creating this piece of music I ensured it fitted perfectly to the film and built tension at the correct time, to the correct amount. We also selected characters and a situation many viewers are familiar with and can relate to, thus keeping interested throughout.

I have also taken great consideration into the characters, costumes and setting to address my audience. The two characters we have chosen are within the social group we wish to represent and thus allowing the audience to relate to the film and its narrative more easily. The costumes are dark and plain which emphasises the darkness of our piece, allowing it to become unsettling and threatening. I feel
the setting also does this through being in a location that is easily recognisable but secluded and mysterious. This genre would easily excite my audience as they would take constant interest in how many conventions my opening meets and how I have tried to emphasise these conventions in as many interesting ways as possible.

Similarly to ours, recent film release 'Sucker Punch' shows the uprising power of young female characters, also targeted at a young audience. The first two minutes of this film put great emphasis on the vulnerability of a young girl, with the slow build up of atmospheric music.
